Life is tough for all new mothers, especially for single parents and for those in low-income families. The average cost of raising a child in the UK to the age of 21 is £229,251, with the first year of a child’s life costing at least £11,000.
Child poverty is on the rise in the UK, with 3.7 million children living in poverty, which is almost a third of all children. Out of these children, 1.7 million of these children are living in severe poverty. We can no longer blame an alleged ‘culture of worklessness’ for child poverty either, as two-thirds of children living in poverty are in a household where at least one person works.
Growing up in poverty can have a huge impact on a child’s health and education. Infant mortality is 10% higher for babies in low-income families than the national average. A three-year-old living in poverty is twice as likely to suffer from a chronic illness than a three-year-old in a high-income household.
By the age of two, a child from a poor family is already more likely to show a lower level of attainment than the national average. At the end of their first year of school, less than half of pupils entitled to free school meals will have a good level of development, compared to 67% of all other pupils.
Some new mothers may have recently had to flee from domestic violence. Evidence suggests that 30% of domestic violence starts or worsens during pregnancy, and some pregnant women will make a brave decision to leave their partner in the interests of their own and their child’s safety. However, those women are unlikely to have sufficient savings to support themselves during the later stages of pregnancy and after childbirth.
At Al-Mizan Charitable Trust, we believe that every mother deserves to give her baby the best start in life. To celebrate Mother’s Day, we will distribute Mother & Baby Kits across the UK, which are starter packs for new mothers, who cannot afford essential baby items.
Each Kit is worth £60 and contains nappies, wipes, nappy sacks, nappy rash cream, changing mat, hooded towel, blanket, baby grows, hat, vests, socks, bibs, scratch mitts, bottle, pacifier, thermometer, cotton wool balls, muslin cloths, nail cutter, rattle, toys, and non-bio laundry detergent.
With your support, we can make sure that every mother we help can give her baby the best start in life.
